A Book For Bob

Before I get out of this here internet cafe, one quick book suggestion - which, to be perfectly honest, I never read, though it sits on my shelf:

Steven Pressfield's "Gates of Fire"
Got great reviews from the history/military buffs I know. A fictional account of the Battle of Marathon.

Ciao for now...

Hey Julia,

Gates of Fire is a pretty good book. I read it a few years ago. It is actually an account of the battle of thermopylae (which means gates of fire in greek), where a handful of Spartan soldiers delayed an advancing Persian Army numbering in the thousands for several days, until they were finally overwhelmed and killed. Some people argue that this battle inspired the Greeks to rally against the Persians and ultimately saved what we now call Western Civilization. I think the historical accuracy of the book is questionable, but it is nonetheless an interesting read (good airport book!).

JM,
I assume that I am the "Bob" you recommended "Gates" for; thanks for the recommendation, I appreciate it!

Since you had Heinlein's rules for writing posted on your blog, I would assume you are a science fiction fan, correct?

I am currently reading a good SF book entitled "Old Man's War" by John Scalzi. I actually learned about it on a different Blog, and happened to see it when I went to Barnes and Noble last weekend. It reads like a Heinlein novel, and concerns a military in the distant future; the senior citizens in that future trade in their old bodies for cloned replacements, and enlist in the army for a period of ten years, after which they are rewarded with a pension and a homestead on a newly settled colony in outerspace. Thus far it is a pretty interesting novel. . .

Oops. Thanks for the correction on which battle it was! I'll check out Scalzi. I am a sci-fi fan, but I haven't read any in a while. I was reading Haruki Murakami's "Hard-Boiled Wonderland at the End of the World" but I stalled. I've been on a mostly fiction kick. Good topic for a future post, though.
